crit space

Crit space, mixed media installation, New York ( english version below )

Creation by the place and for the place to become a new one. Crit space is an open room, a place of passage, often occupied, and there are objects stored, waiting to be thrown away or arranged elsewhere. This installation results from an earlier observation of the place and its peculiarities. I decided to apprehend this place as it was offered to me.

My approach is to take ownership of the place, to invest at a given moment, a D-day, at a specific time, taking into account the constraints of space, materials and time. Thanks to the photography realized in situ, to the light and the arrangement of the non-artistic objects, to banal a priori, the spectator is invited to rediscover, to perceive differently this room. The objects change their status and become an integral part of the work, a work generated in particular by their presence here. Entering objects as they are in the installation makes them become major components of the work. This it results in a kind of ambiguity as to their artistic status or not.

These "ready mades" are promoted as artistic by the only choice of the artist. Ambiguity that is also found in the contrast between light and darkness. The elements voluntarily left in the dark, withdrawn are revealed by the negation of their presence. The projection on the wall invites the viewer to question the place represented, as well as the place itself. The strong texture of the wall modifies the image and strengthens it. Photography takes on materiality and integrates into the place, on its scale. The artistic act is as much in the process of construction as in the final installation. It Is a kind of performative process; staging process, setting in space, lighting. The only trace of this ephemeral intervention, of this momentary transformation, lies in a photographic documentation.

This installation tries to create a general subtle tension, a game between materials and space.
